At the end of 2021, Covid restrictions and uncertainty was still a major driving force in determining how Bath County High School and Bath County 4-H conducted daily operations, programming, and met its goals for its youth. A current Bath County 4-H Council member, whom is a teaching assistant at BCHS, approached this agent about working with a class of students whom been identified as Special Needs. After discussion amongst this agent, that class's teaching assistant, and the high school principal it was determined this audience will benefit immensely from having 4-H incorporated in its instruction.
BCHS Ms. Holbrook Special Needs Class first meeting consisted of them learning what 4-H is and its mission and this agent asking them what they would like to learn about or what they like doing. Class members voted on a School Club Name called "Cowboys and Cowgirls". Club members elected their club officers and discussed when this club will meet. This school club was delivered as an "Exploring 4-H" project. During club meetings, youth had a cooking lesson where they made cookies, made Christmas gifts for family, lesson on moon phases with coloring pages, and science lessons on potential/kinetic energy and gravity.
From verbal and written reports from club members and teachers, youth participants were excited knowing their 4-H Club will be meeting and anxious up to the next meeting. Family members, of students, were pleased to see the results of their students crafts and lessons taught. One report from a parent stated, "I am so glad my child is able to learn 4-H like any other student and my baby really loves when they meet, as a club".
