Data from the 2017 Early Childhood Profile indicates that only 34.3% of children in Clinton County are ready to enter kindergarten. Because every child deserves the opportunity to develop early literacy skills, the Clinton County Cooperative Extension Service partnered with the Community Early Childhood Council to promote implementation of and enrollment in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Through participation in the Imagination Library, each month an age appropriate book is mailed to the enrolled child’s (age birth-five years) home at no cost to the parent. The books are mailed directly to the child, in his or her own name, in order to create a sense of excitement and bond with the books. Receiving books at home ensures accessibility for all children and enhances each child’s ability to begin kindergarten better prepared to read and learn regardless of economic background or family structure. 87 young children enrolled in the program during its first year. The program has received much positive community feedback both from families and community partners. Children are excited about their books and look forward to receiving new ones each month. The number of requests for enrollment certainly exceeded available funds, but a number of community partners have started to invest in the program so it can expand and continue.
