Tornado Feeding Program

Author: Matthew Chadwick

Planning Unit: Calloway County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - ANR

Plan of Work: 2021 Local Foods/Commercial Horticulture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Monday morning following the Dec. 10th Tornado the Cattlemen’s group from Daviess County KY brought supplies and their equipment down and cooked and prepared lunches for distribution to tornado victims and workers. I coordinated local volunteers from a variety of our programs, local churches and Murray State University to assist with distribution of the meals. We were unable to set-up in the disaster area because of the lack of electricity, water, and the general concern for safety. Therefore we sat up at a church outside of town that also assisted us in locating sites to drop meals at. We sent extension volunteers as groups to communities to go door to door and hand out meals. That day we distributed over 400 meals, many of case of water and established a meal service that the church themselves continued on with for 3 weeks post-tornado, handing out at the peak over 100 meals a day, many of our volunteers returned to the church to assist on other days. In addition our volunteers assisted many people during the meal delivery informing them of local supply distribution points, even returning back to sites with truckloads of supplies from the church. One volunteer group knocked on an elderly woman’s door, a block over from where the tornado had completely destroyed all buildings, and this woman was wheel chair bound, and unable to care for herself. Her caretaker had not been to see her in three days and her phone line was not working so she had no way to call for help. They were able to get her food and water, and waited with her till emergency services arrived to take her to the hospital. Many of the places the volunteers went to they had to walk and carry food for over a mile due to blocked roads and limited access. Many people on site mentioned that they had not eaten all day.
