The week following the Dec. 10th Tornado saw lots of concerns come to life amongst our farming communities. One of which was that one of the major local cattle buyers had been reported on the news as receiving large amounts of damage to his receiving yards. In addition the buy was not present at the cattle sale that following weekend. After receiving many panicked calls about concerns with local prices not maintaining with national trends, I contacted our state Cattle Marketing specialist and discussed the matter with him and he provided me with some talking points. I then contacted the order buyer who had received damage to their yards and was able to talk to him on his level due to the information that our specialist had provided. He made multiple assurances that he would be buying cattle as normal and most importantly gave me permission to share that information with those that were concerned. This gave multiple producers the confidence to be able to send their calves to market and relieve pressure from their operations so that they could recover from tornado damage. This basic communication was well received by all parties involved and proved critical to the handful of producers that were affected.
