According to research by Iowa State University, " The subject of clothing relates to almost every other subject taught, such as history, physics, chemistry, physiology and design. Additional research by the Home Sewing Association also shows that sewing fosters self esteem in youth along with increasing the child's ability to make decisions and think thought processes in a step-by-step manner.
During the second and third weeks of April 2022, the Extension Agent for FCS and the high school FCS teacher cooperated to teach 43 students in 2 classes of "Essentials of FCS" the basics of sewing as they constructed an apron during class. The FCS agent assisted with teaching and the Extension Office helped with providing fabrics as well. 50% of the students had not sewn on a sewing machine prior. of the 43 students, 10 had participated in 4-H sewing projects; When those students finished their own aprons, they assisted the other students with sewing machine threading and reinforcing instructions. 39 of the students were successful in completing their apron project during the alloted time frame. When asked to share their thoughts these are some of the student's comments: "Helping other people was the best part - I liked showing my friends what they needed to do." "My granny will like this apron. She might not believe that I made it." "I looked forward to class on these days." " I can't wait to take my apron home."
