Freezer Beef From Local Producer in Local Grocery Story

Author: David Coffey

Planning Unit: Jackson County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production and Marketing

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Since 2017, the Jackson County Agriculture agent has been working with a local producer and their beef operation. The producer started without a cattle background and relied heavy on the extension office for guidance. Since 2017, the producer has attended nearly all cattlemen meetings and several educational workshops including but not limited to, Artificial insemination certification, freezer beef boot camp, rotational grazing work shops, and fencing school. This producer has went from starting with a few cows and a poorly managed farm, to Artificial insemination and rotational grazing a beef operation. As of May 2022, this producer is now finishing beef on farm and having slaughtered with a USDA facility and is selling beef in a local grocery store in the county. The local beef has been a huge success for the farmer and the store. His first beef sold out in less than 24 hours in the grocery store when people found out it was from a local producer. It is hopeful that this success will be adopted by other producers and we will have much more local beef for sale from local producers who have adopted many extension practices.
