Sharing Diverse Agricultural Practices in the Business Community

Planning Unit: Marshall County CES

Major Program: Economic Development

Plan of Work: Healthy Living Lifestyles for Youth, Families & Community

Outcome: Initial Outcome

To strengthen ties between the local Chamber of Commerce and the county’s agriculture community, the Marshall County Extension Office hosted a Chamber breakfast for members to network with others within the organization. Agriculture & Natural Resources, Family & Consumer Sciences, and 4-H Youth Development agents opened the program with an overview of services and programs provided by the Cooperative Extension Service. Two local businesses were spotlighted and offered brief presentations about their unique forms of agriculture.

The first, an aquaponics operation, whose mission is to grow premium quality produce and fish using high tech agriculture in a controlled environment, while providing education regarding aquaponics. Many of those in attendance expressed interest in learning more about the small family-owned business and the produce they market and sell locally, as well as regionally with year-round production.

The second local agribusiness is a cooperative that connects families to high quality farm fresh products from local family farms. The products are harvested at peak and delivered quickly, therefore the taste and quality is far superior to anything purchased at a grocery store. They offer a menu of locally grown produce selections through their website, then a nearby pick-up location is coordinated to make the delivery most accessible.

Chamber members are now more aware of diverse agriculture practices in our community. One of the businesses said they are receiving inquiries about touring their operation and local commerce has increased. Of the fifty people in attendance, 100% stated they prefer to shop locally and consider the diversity of agricultural products necessary to remain healthy and productive in today’s business community.
