Health & Nutrition: Learning at a young age

Author: Robin Burton

Planning Unit: Grayson County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services states that “thirty-eight percent of Kentucky children ages 10-17 are considered overweight or obese (chfs.ky.gov).” Because the obesity rate is so high in our state, it is imperative that children learn how to eat properly and the importance of physical activity as early as possible.  The Nutrition Education Program Assistant from Grayson County recently taught a series of nutrition lessons to the fourth-grade classes at Caneyville Elementary School in Caneyville, KY.  84 students took a pre and post-test; of those students 56% increased their physical activity and 52% reduced their screen time.  The surveys also showed that 70% of students stated they now eat fruits and vegetables as snacks, and 71% have improved hand washing routines.  Over-all this series of lessons was a great success.
