Heifer Development Day

Planning Unit: Washington County CES
Major Program: Beef
Plan of Work: Increasing Agricultural Systems In Washington County
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
One of the most expensive aspects of a cow-calf operation is raising replacement heifers for your herd. It is a long-term investment to develop quality bred heifers to retain as replacements or to market these heifers to other producers privately. This multi-station meeting was designed to help producers understand the true cost of developing heifers and to hopefully give them a few ideas on how they can save money. This was done through discussions on evaluation presented by Livestock Division Director John Chism and Brandy Graves, health and vaccines presented by Dr. Webb our local veterinarian, and nutrition which was presented by Cargill representative Daniel Reynolds.
There were over 50 producers in attendance, with varying experience levels, so speakers made sure to allow time for questions at the end of their presentations. The producers were very engaged in the topics and asked a variety of questions following each station. Several producers, even those that are more experienced, expressed how helpful this field day was and that they planned to take the knowledge they gained back and apply it to their herds.
This program was held in conjunction with Washington County Cattlemens.
