Bizzy Bee Ag Crop Garden

Author: Anthony Tackett

Planning Unit: Harrison County CES

Major Program: Community Gardens and Horticulture Therapy

Plan of Work: Horticulture Production Practices

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Master Gardeners continued to develop new outreach opportunities at the Bizzy Bee community gardens.  The Bizzy Bee urban gardens are located at a local adult day care and retirement center.  The original intent of this project was to act as a therapeutic garden for the residents of the center to provide additional sensory stimulation and physical activity.  The garden has been expanded each of the last several years to include different activities and plantings.  Volunteers continue to work with local businesses and organizations to secure support for expansion projects.  Over 30 residents were involved in the planning and establishment of the latest develop project involving small samples of local agriculture crops typical to Bourbon County.  Crops included sample plantings of wheat, soybeans, corn, and other crops.  The idea for this project came about because staff at the center realized that several residents at the facility were former farmers.  After the project was installed staff at the center reported a strong response by residents with prior farm experience to the plantings.  Many often fondly recalled experiences from years past when taking part in this part of the sensory garden.  Staff are very optimistic with the results of this garden project and hope to install more themed sections in the future.
