Planning Unit: Breckinridge County CES

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Nutrition and Physical Activity

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Bingocize® was created by Dr. Jason Crandall, Co-Director/Co-Founder at the WKU Center for Applied Science in Health & Aging. He created the socially engaging group-based game that combines health education and exercise in the format of BINGO. Dr. Crandall and his research team have tested the program and demonstrated that over 90% of older adults who played two times a week for 10 weeks significantly improved physical, social and mental health.

To help participants learn and use health information focused on behavior related to exercise, the FCS Agent in Henderson County taught Bingocize® to twelve participants for 10 week met at the Henderson County Library.  Of these participants, six completed post evaluations.

Prior to the program, ten participants reported that their health was very good. After the program, three participants reported very good health, two fair health and one excellent health. Also, prior to the program, five participants reported having fear of falling in the last three months. Following the program zero participants reported having a fear of falling in the last ten weeks.

As a result of this program, six participants feel more comfortable talking to health care providers about medications and other fall risk factors. All participants feel more comfortable talking to family and friends about falling and would recommend this program to a friend or relative.

Participants enjoyed Bingocize® because they liked the exercises mixed with playing bingo.  They enjoyed each other in the group and helped them become motivated to come and do the program.  Participants did not want the program to end.  They also enjoyed the 60’s music played during the exercises.  The participants said they would like to do the program again in the future.
