Women make up nearly 40% of the agricultural producers in Kentucky. The number of ladies who own and operate farms and agribusinesses continues to increase each year. The importance of their contributions to a vibrant agricultural economy are tremendous.
“Ladies in Ag” was an educational series designed to educate, empower, inspire, and connect ladies who are involved or interested in agriculture. It featured motivational stories presented by strong women who shared their experiences, successes, and challenges. It was presented over three evenings by the W7 & W8 ANR/HORT agents. Fifty-nine ladies registered for the program, 5 being from Allen County.
The first session was held over Zoom. It featured videos of Loretta Lyons, Hade’s Triple K Farms in Monroe Co., and Michelle Howell, Need More Acres Farm in Allen County. They shared their inspirational stories through videos that were produced by the agents. Risk management was also highlighted.
The second program was delivered over Zoom. Laney Snider and Danielle Allen, Ruby Branch Farms in Simpson Co., and Katherine Woodward, Black Lick Creek Apiary & Market in Logan Co., told their stories through pre-recorded videos. Setting goals and business plans were discussed.
The third session was held in-person at the Warren Co. Extension Office. Attendees were able to connect and make new friends, and a delicious meal was provided at no charge. Several agricultural organizations had informational booths set up, and were able to discuss the resources they can help provide to farmers. Ms. Sharon Furches, KY Farm Bureau 2nd VP, was the keynote speaker. The “Ladies in Ag” group plans to meet again in the fall of 2022 to build on their networking opportunities
