Plan of Work: Empowering Youth to Reach Their Full Potential
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
According to America’s Health Rankings only 20.6% of youth in the United States of America are active at least 60 minutes every day. At West Kentucky 4-H Camp youth get to exceed 60 minutes of physical activity a day while they are walking to classes, running at Mega Relay, and swimming in the pool during free recreation time. Lyon County 4-H attended 4-H camp on June 7-10, 2022, at West KY 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, KY. Campers ages 9-14 had the opportunity to master new skills such as riflery, swimming, canoeing, fishing, archery, high ropes, cooking, and agriculture. An article in Parent Circle mentions that interest in new skills benefits youth by relieving stress, improve cognitive skills, building social skills, and contributes to emotional health. At 4-H camp all participants are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and learn a new skill. 4-H campers had the chance to gain independence and confidence due to being away from home for a week. There were plenty of fun activities for campers to enjoy such as GaGa Ball, dances, slip-n-slides, Mega Relay games, and the beautiful outdoors. Campers had the ability to try new things and make new friends from across the state of Kentucky. Lyon County 4-H was proud to take 45 campers, 14 teen leaders and 6 adult volunteers. There is a large community buy in for 4-H camp due to the large amount of support that is given for 4-H Camp scholarships. For 2022 4-H camp 6 local business and 2 individuals donated to the scholarship fund over $3,000 was donated to send youth to 4-H camp. Many positive, life-long memories were made at 4-H Camp.
