The World's Greatest Baby Shower is an educational event that was organized in 2007. The importance of prenatal and newborn health care is a topic that has been identified as important to Union County. The WGBS committee consists around 8 community partners that come together to discuss issues and develop a program that would be beneficial to expectant moms. The expected educational benefit of the project is to be prepared to bring a healthy new baby home. A light meal was served to the participants.
To prepare for this event begins several months in advance. The committee met 3 various times in early spring and decided to host this year’s event in person once again. Many hours prior to event go into planning, getting supplies, marketing, preparing program, contacting exhibitors, planning for light meal, setting up and purchasing baby shower gifts.
This year the event was held on June 9th, 2022, at the Union County Middle School and is the 16th year since it began. The program this year consists of Facts of Life Baby Shower Game, Smiles for Life, Safe Sleep, Deaconess Henderson Women's Services, "Ask the Expert”. The Ask the Expert session allowed participants to ask questions to OBGYN and APRN.
In attendance were 26 new or expectant moms ranging in age 19-36 and guest. There were 15 exhibitor booths the participants were able to take advantage of and receive vital information. Around 10 committee members, and 8 volunteers were in attendance to help throughout the evening and many helping hands throughout the day to set up.
The educational event was sponsored by Union County KY ASAP, Deaconess Henderson Hospital, Mead Johnson, Morganfield Wal-Mart, Union County Schools, UC FRYSC, Union County Homemakers, Riverview Coal, Early Childhood Council and the Union County Extension Service. There was over $1,000 in prizes compliment of grant, donations from vendors and event sponsors with each participant receiving 2-3 gifts totaling an average of $100.00 each. Expectant moms must attend the entire event in order to be eligible for prize drawings at the end.
The exit evaluations showed that 100% of the participants learned something new and indicated useful information was given. The community partners were complimentary and satisfied with the overall success of the baby shower.
