This 2022 summer; Uplift which consists of Ken Jones, Kerri Ashurst, Allison Young, Chandra Deramus, Tyrone Atkinson, and Maria Harris; offered youth life skills programing during the Grand Slam Summer camp at Crawford Middle school in Fayette County. This 2 week camp focused on various topics from participating partners and Uplift was privileged to be one of those partners and address multiple areas of life skills with the participating youth.
During the camp, our programming covered effective verbal and nonverbal communication, problem solving techniques, decision making, vision and goal setting. We had an average of 15 youth participants in each session throughout our 2 weeks. The president-elect of the 4-H Youth Social Justice Leadership Board volunteered her services at 4 sessions. Following the programming, our SJLB volunteer reported being interested in continuing this type of programming with the help of the rest of the board in the future, many youth participants reported that they "enjoyed our programming and wouldn't suggest any changes", and the facilitators who are also teachers expressed that they were "taking notes of the activities so they could do them throughout the year themselves.” All students reported learning something new.
