Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development - Leadership

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth states that “youth development experiences are connected to positive outcomes, including increases in positive attitudes and behaviors, such as motivation, academic performance, self-esteem, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Participation in leadership development experiences is linked to increased self-efficacy and the development of skills relevant to success in adulthood and the workplace such as decision-making and working well with others.”

During the months building up to April 2022, Campbell County 4-H Teen leadership met monthly to develop and plan a day camp for cloverbud-aged children, kindergarten- 3rd grade. The group of 22 middle schoolers and high schoolers worked through the process of planning a program. They identified their purpose and goals for the day camp, planned the schedule and details of each activity, created a resource and supply list, and provided the program the day of.

At the conclusion of the program, 92% of the teens strongly agree with the statement “4-H is a place where I have a chance to be a leader.” Furthermore, all teens either agree or strongly agree with the statement “Helping out in my community provides me with a sense of accomplishment.” A three-month post-evaluation follow-up indicated that 100% of the teen leadership participants plan to participate in the Campbell County 4-H Teen Leadership club in the upcoming year, and strongly agree with the statement “I use skills I learned in 4-H in other activities at home, school, or in my community.”
