Outcome: Initial Outcome

Due to the pandemic, a different way to reach people with local science-based gardening information was needed.   Therefore, a partnership between the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service and the Daviess County Public Library was developed. Gardening programs were presented by the horticulture agent through PowerPoint during Facebook Live and recorded by the library. During the second year of the partnership, eight presentations were delivered on topics such as Dividing Perennials; Tips for Properly Fertilizing the Lawn and Other Plants; Things to Consider When Selecting and Planting a Tree; Considerations Before Planting Backyard Fruit Trees; Growing Lettuce and Other Greens; Growing Tomatoes and Peppers; Growing and Using Microgreens; and Growing Cucumbers, Squash, and Pumpkins. An average of 4 people per session joined online during mid-afternoon.  However, over 74 engagements have been recorded during the year and over 124 viewed a program for at least one minute during the year.

Both, the Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service and Daviess County Public Library have benefited from the partnership.  The library programming person said that the presentation and videos support the physical seed library housed there.  Also, by keeping the videos on the Facebook page, the library and extension are providing people with 24/7 access to Kentucky science-based educational information.  She also said that even though they have many gardening books, some people benefit from being instructed by a person.  Library personnel refer patrons to the videos since they are on their Facebook page indefinitely.
