Major Program: Poultry/Small Flocks

Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Ballard County had their first ever Chicken and Turkey Barbecue event this summer. Dr. Jackie Jacob, from UK, worked with my co-worker Tom Miller and myself to put on a fun, educational and tasty event at our Extension Office.  We had 12 participants who learned about chicken and turkey barbecue, nutrition and food safety while having a fun time and enjoying the chicken breasts and turkey burgers that they cooked.  Our local responsibility was to get the meat to cook and the sides to enjoy with the meal.  We also set up tables and chairs.  Dr. Jacob brought the table covers, utensils, grills, sanitizing stations and more. She taught how to set up charcoal, how to sanitize utensils as they cooked, about food safety and showed participants how to use a food thermometer to reach a safe temperature for the meat. She also talked about the related state event in July.  A local poultry farmer got the chicken donated for us from Pilgrims Pride. The kids were very proud of their new skills and thoroughly enjoyed cooking.  Some got to share their efforts with parents and grandparents who came for meal time!  We plan to do this again and hopefully have youth who will go to the state Chicken and Poultry Barbecue Contest.
