The Pikeville Farmers Market and the Pike County Extension Offices sponsored the Annual Appalachian Heirloom Seed Swap on April 7th at Pike Central High School.  We had over 40 vendors and over 400 participants.  Day started with the Pumpkin/Squash Cutting and continued with swap, trainings/etc.  Trainings included KSU demo of the Honey Bee Hive Sterilization Unit, and included Sharing Seeds and Stories (Ben Cohen/Small House Farm), Appalachian Heirloom Vegetables-Italian Accent (Bob Perry, UK chef & Sustainable Agriculture), Tomato Grafting (Rhonella Chaffin, Extension Master Gardener).  Media coverage included Appalachian News Express family of papers (front page), 2 appearances on EKB-TV, Appalshop, Radio rounds at EKB, and film coverages today by EKB and WYMT. States represented included Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina and of course Kentucky in the vendor sections. We had two vendors from Promise Zone Counties - KNOX and Letcher.This is a successful program which attract vendors and clients from many states.
