Planning Unit: Clark County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: A Well Farmed Countryside

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, Henry County has almost $10,000,000 of cattle sales, and a cattle inventory of over 22,000 head. With this being said, cattle production is extremely important to the economic status of Henry Country. With this knowledge, the Henry County Cooperative Extension Service decide to work with the Shelby and Oldham Extension Offices to host the 2017 Master Cattlemen’s Series. The Master Cattlemen’s Series is a ten week beef education series covering genetics, nutrition, management, facilities, marketing, forages, health, reproduction, environment, and end product. All sessions were taught by UK Specialists, and facilitated by the agricultural extension agents of Henry, Oldham, and Shelby Counties. To pass the series, participants had to attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions, and obtain a Beef Quality Assurances certificate. Thirty-one individuals attended the series. Of those individuals, ten participants were females, and eleven were young farmers. Since there was a stipulation for attending at least 8 classes and obtain a BQA certificate to pass, twenty-six individuals successfully passed the Master Cattlemen’s Class, and will receive a metal farm sign stating they are a “KY Master Cattlemen”. This is a very intense class, but participants have explained how this class has given them the information to make better beef cattle choices. One individual even stated, “This is the best class I have taken!”
