The USDA’s 2017 census indicated that 14 farmers utilized 16 acres for vegetable production. This is down from 2012 when 16 farmers utilized 25 acres for vegetable production. The Extension Agent led a discussion with the Anderson County Farmers Market Association regarding programming and subject matter prioritization. The marker has been rapidly expanding its number of participants under the current president and in 2022 has opened up its second location within the community.
Several monthly educational programs related to produce best practices, safety, farmers market merchandising, and alternative revenue streams were planned by the Extension Agent and conducted by the Agent, Specialists, and the Farmers Market President. Programs include, 3 Produce Best Practices Training, offered in-person and via web zoom, The Center for Crop Diversification’s Visual Merchandising, Senior Voucher Training, and Women and Infant Children Training.
During the year, 39 producers attended one or more of these programs. Producers will be given a written survey at the end of the farmer's market season to share how their training has benefited them and any changes that need to be made. After speaking with farmer's market vendors, because of the programming, producers at the farmer's market, more than 75% have implanted marketing strategies, merchandising techniques, produce handling guidelines, and/or accepting more than just cash.
Participants described their gratitude for the programs in addition to recommending more program ideas for the future. Producers are interested in identifying and exploring new markets, value-added product development, using price data to increase revenue, innovative production and marketing ideas, and farmer's market expansion. They have also expressed interest in visiting commercial operations located around the state to discuss ideas on the expansion of their own enterprises or incorporating new enterprises.
