Agriculture Day Camp

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Agriculture

Plan of Work: Natural Resources and the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Bullitt County has become increasingly more suburban which has led to a decrease in knowledge about agriculture at all levels; this data has led local leadership to identify a need for more agriculture and natural resources programs. From this data, the Bullitt County Cooperative Extension office determined various short- and long-term goals dealing with increasing agricultural knowledge. For youth, these goals included gaining gardening skills to improve their knowledge over food and nutrition. The Bullitt County 4-H agents partnered with Crossroads Elementary School to bring educational programming to 35 youth participants and 6 adult volunteers during a summer day camp.

During this day camp, youth were able to learn about the different parts of a plant, what plants need to grow, why plants are important for them, and had an opportunity to plant their own impatiens and succulents. Before beginning the program, the youth were asked to raise their hands if they had ever been able to plant anything before; only 10 youth had previous experience planting plants. By the end of the day camp, all youth had hands on experience with planting plants, and were able to take home 4 plants that they had planted themselves.
