Planning Unit: Taylor County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Commercial

Plan of Work: Commercial and Homeowner Horticulture Education

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Casey County ANR agent approached the Taylor County Horticulture and ANR agent with the idea to create and host a Women in Ag Conference. The goal of this conference was to provide agriculture / horticulture programming with a focus on women. With knowledge the women gained, the agents are hoping they will take what they learned and apply it to an existing or new farming enterprise. Along with several other ANR and horticulture agents in neighboring counties, the first Central Kentucky Women in Ag Conference was held on June 4th. The event consisted of several workshops including two taught by the Taylor County Horticulture agent. The first workshop taught by the Taylor County Horticulture agent was titled "Beginning Greenhouse / High Tunnel for Commercial Growers". The agent focused on things to consider when building and maintaining both greenhouses and high tunnels. Resources were handed out such as ID- 36 and the High Tunnel Planting Calendar. The second workshop taught by the Taylor County Horticulture agent was titled Value Added Ornamental Production. This workshop covered current trends within flower production such as new varieties, unique planters, and each participant created their own flower planter to take home. The total number of participants for this event was 21 along with 7 other ANR / Horticulture agents, who were also teaching workshops such as backyard poultry flocks, beekeeping, backgrounding cattle, bookkeeping, etc. Sponsors for the event were Taylor and Casey County Farm Bureau, Tarter Gate, and Farm Credit who also spoke about financing opportunities. At the close of the program many participants were wondering when the conference would be held next year. As of now, it is planned to be an annual program and rotate to a different county each year.
