The Pike County Family & Consumer Sciences Council recognized the need to help local citizens have the opportunity to be more physically active. The Council recognizes themselves as a valuable resource that can gather information from many organizations and share it. With that in mind, in late 2017 the FCS Council agreed to begin working on mapping all safe walking sites currently available in Pike County including several maintained by the City of Pikeville, the county government and our school systems. A meeting with the Director of Emergency Management revealed that 17 sites were already mapped.
The result will be a map, detailing all designated walking site around the county. It will include 911 addresses for the sites, track/trail information, and hours of operation. It will also include tips for safe walking as well as pertinent community historical information of interest. The maps will be available at all walking sites, county tourism, local hotels and through our community partners. A digital format of the map is also planned for the future.
