LSCC Master Gardener Program

Author: Mary McCarty

Planning Unit: Menifee County CES

Major Program: Master Gardener

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Little Sandy Correctional Complex requested a Master Gardener program in 2009.  The program continued for 5 years until the ANR agent transferred to the Menifee ANR/4-H Position.  The program had a lot of success throughout the years.  Each inmate that graduated from the 12-week class received 90 days off their sentence and received their restricted use pesticide license.  There were 5 inmates that received initial jobs in the horticulture field after being paroled.  From time to time the Elliott County Extension Office receives phone calls from paroled inmates asking for their license.

In the summer of 2022 a past graduate of the LSSC Master Gardener program reached out for help with insect identification and control.  In the conversation he spoke highly of the program and how the program was great benefit for his transition from prison.  He stated that he wished all of his fellow inmates could of received the education and opportunities that the Master Gardener program provided to him.
