Major Program: Cook Wild Kentucky

Plan of Work: Improving Physically and Mentally

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Hunting is a popular activity for people to do with their kids here in the state. With Kentucky's vast lands and wooded areas hunting is a great way to get outdoors. I was able to partner with Grant County Nutrition Education Program (SNAP), Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, and UK Department of Agriculture to put on a 2 month long Cook Wild series focusing on the recipes provided by SNAP. Lorie Dunn (Grant SNAP) provided the weekly meetings for families to come in together and cook wild game. Weekly there were about 14 adults and about 6 youth each wek. Alongside the cooking we also held opportunities for families to learn more about wild game and hunting. We hosted a canning night where families learned about canning safety and preserving their food along with dear processing with Dr. Gregg Rentfrow. Adults and youth had the opportunity get their orange card as well so they can get out in the fall. We were able to kick this all off over spring break with a Fishing Day at Piddle Park. Here we worked with Kentucky fish and Wildlife to get poles and catfish so participants can try their hand at filleting them. We then worked again with them to learn about Field to Form and processing squirrels! Overall we had a great turn out for this program and look forward to growing it in the future! Participants enjoyed spending time together as a family and said they are able to make dietary changes in their lives for the better!
