Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Science, Engineering, and Technology

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This past school year I was invited to facilitate STEM programming to 20 students in contained LBD(learning and behavior disorder) /EBD (emotional and behavior disorder) classroom at Krammer Middle School, the FYRSC (family and youth resource service coordinator), wanted this particular group to participate in an academically stimulating but fun in-school activity. Ms. Thomas, the FRYSC expressed to me that these two classrooms of EBD/LBD students very seldom received an opportunity to expand their learning experience in the subject of science, so when I told her about the robotics program, she was excited to get started. Prior to facilitating the programming, I had to adapt surveys and lessons to meet the individual learner needs in the classroom. Instead of open-ended survey questions, I opted in for star rating questions that we completed together. Some of the students had poor reading skills, short attention spans, and some were excellent readers and writers who volunteered to help their peers with their robotics project and surveys 90% of the students expressed that they did not have an interest in STEM prior to robotics programming, afterwards 50% expressed that their interest in STEM had grown as a result of the robotics program.
