National Farm Machinery Show booth highlights tornado recovery efforts

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The University of Kentucky Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering’s booth at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville focused on the impacts of the December 2021 tornadoes. The retrospective was designed to show what happened and the ongoing recovery efforts. The goal of this project was to make sure the response and resilience of the affected communities remained visible during what will be a long rebuilding effort. 

? Components:? 

  1. Partnership with UK Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History to facilitate recording oral histories of the tornado during NFMS; using new telephone recording system so people can voluntarily call to record their oral history at their convenience.? 
  2.  “Have You Herd?” podcast to interview principals/professionals who involved in response efforts, including UK Extension, state and local government, National Weather Service, etc. Scheduled interviews that pertain to the immediate event, weather trends/reports, and plans.?Interviews are part of the Louie B. Nunn Center archive. 

Display Components 

  1. UK Ag Weather Center display 
  2. BAE Extension: temporary fencing, generators, tornado shelter drawings?display 
  3. Graphics, handouts, etc.
