The Mountain Zoom

Author: Jeremy Williams

Planning Unit: Harlan County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Improve and sustain agriculture production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Due to spikes in the pandemic, demand for Extension programing, on a virtual level, continued during the fall and winter of 2021 and 2022.  Agents in Harlan and Letcher Counties, along with agents in Wise, Virginia, Johnson, Tennessee and North Carolina, felt the need to continue their Mountain Zoom series that began in March 2020.  Programs, two evenings per week, centered on agriculture, community development, horticulture, beekeeping and small livestock.  Agents were able to partnership with specialists from the four states to present timely topics that were needed, by clientele, to help them succeed.  The Harlan ANR agent was able to bring topics such as amateur radio, gardening basics, pesky mosses and algae around the home, and starting transplants.  As the pandemic numbers began to decrease and in-person programing began to increase, and the Mountain Zoom was placed on pause.   Nearly 150 timely sessions helped to teach clientele thru a virtual method for nearly two years.  An unintended result of the series was an opportunity for families to learn together during an unsettling time. Spouses, grandparents, parents and children quite often participated in the series together.
