According to the CDC.gov “Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States, putting children and adolescents at risk for poor health. Obesity prevalence among children and adolescents is still too high. The prevalence of obesity was 19.7% and affected about 14.7 million children and adolescents.”

As a solution to a very serious and huge problem we decided to teach children the basics of healthy choices with basic cooking skills with Super Star Chef Curriculum. In this curriculum children gained knowledge in the kitchen while also making homemade healthy meals.

The class was held for 3 days and students learned to make healthy snacks and lunches. These included Fiesta Salsa, Spaghetti, Whole Grain Pizza, and Yogurt Parfaits. Also while learning knife skills, reading recipes, way to prepare fruits and vegetables and more. The students enjoyed this class this so much they even said “it’s the best day ever!”

Kids are more likely to try and enjoy healthier foods if they participate in the cooking process and have knowledge of what they are eating. And these students did so. They took those recipes home and even helped their parents make them to try. One parent even said “I’ve been trying to get her to eat more vegetables but couldn’t until she finished cooking class because now she knew how to make them her self in a enjoyable way!”
