Author: Lori Bowling
Planning Unit: Boyd County CES
Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home
Plan of Work: Best Management Practices in Home Horticulture
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
The local television station hosts an annual Home and Garden Show which draws residents from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia to attend. The Master Gardeners and Extension Agents from Boyd County, Kentucky and Cabell County, West Virginia work together to distribute extension information on home horticulture. The Extension Agents, along with university specialists deliver educational programs over a 2 of the 3 days during the event and set up kids horticulture activities on the 3rd day. During this event, approximately 15,000-20,000 people over the 3 day event will attend with many of them visiting the booth where extension publications are handed out and gardening advice and questions are answered to help residents learn about proper gardening techniques and environmentally sustainable practices they can use to combat insect and disease issues they may have. Many attendees come every year and several give feedback on how the advice they received on their questions or concerns was implemented and helped them with their gardening efforts.
