State Teen Conference

Author: Cathy Toole

Planning Unit: Henry County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: 4-H Youth Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Kentucky 4-H State Teen 2022 Conference was held on UK’s campus.  There were 500 in attendance and eight participants from Henry County.

The conference allows attendees to get the feel of what living on a campus is like while developing leadership skills. Teens participate in educational workshops, working with hands on community service projects, and competing for the highest level of honors achievement in 4-H.  Of course, there are also group activities that allow teens to socialize and get to know other 4-H’ers from across the state.

Henry County was well represented throughout the four-day event. One teen is serving on the 4-H State Teen Council and helped plan the event along with the other council members and state officers. She continued to take a leadership role during the conference.   Another teen serves on the Fashion Leadership Board and help with the State 4-H Style Revue.  On Wednesday night at the Honors Recognition program two Henry County teens received their Silver Level Awards and one received her Bronze Achievement Award.

On Thursday evening a Henry County teen took top honors in the State 4-H Style Revue with the jumpsuit she made and modeled.  She participated in the judging that morning where she was scored on how the jumpsuit fit her and her modeling skills.  She had a question-and-answer period with the judges and in the afternoon the garment was judged on construction.  That evening following the State Style Revue she was chosen as the top winner overall.   The was awarded a Husqvarna sewing machine valued at $900.

A Henry County Shooting Sports Coach taught one of the Major Cohort classes offered on hunting skills over 2 mornings.  He led participants in how to read topo maps, orienteering, animal identification, hunting safety, and ethical hunting.  While most participants participated in one or more disciplines of shooting sports in 4-H, these classes opened the opportunity to participate in the Youth Hunter Challenge.

Henry County continues to step into leadership roles on the county, state, and national level.
