Woods and Wildlife For Your Wallet

More than half the state of Kentucky is forested and of that land 78 percent is owned by private land owners.  According to Billy Thomas UK Forester, Kentucky Woodlands are some of the most productive woodlands in the world if managed properly.  Most landowners are unaware of all the programs that are available.  These services can help develop management plans to ensure proper care and management to carry our woodlands to the next generations.  
In Greenup County both the Cooperative Extension and Soil and Water Conservation Services want to encourage landowners to become connected with services that can help them.  It is also our goal to educate landowners about Timber and Wildlife Management and Non-Timber Forest Products.  
In the previous three years Greenup County Extension and Soil and Water Conservation held Woods and Wildlife for Your Wallet in conjunction with Kentucky Department of Forestry, University of Kentucky Forestry, KY Department of Fish and Wildlife, KY Woodland Owners Association and many local volunteers.  Woods and Wildlife for Your Wallet is a program that offers concurrent sessions such as: Beekeeping, wildlife management, growing shitake mushrooms, Master Logger Program, encouraging and managing a healthy forest.  It is a great opportunity for landowners to interact with the organizations and individuals who can help them the most.  
 Follow up surveys resulted in landowners increasing their knowledge of sources of assistance both technical and financial for woodland management and practices on 300 acres.  The surveys also revealed that landowners that attended the non-timber forest product session plan on implementing those practices this year.
