Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Farm and Environmental Sustainability

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Casey County has been known for their biannual Liberty Belle Sale for a few years now. Casey County does not have a stockyard and this sale was established to showcase local cattle to the local market. In order to keep this sale relevant and containing quality beef females, education needed to be offered. The Casey County Extension Service and the Casey County Cattlemen’s Association collaborated and created the Heifer Development Field Day as a way to educate producers on getting their heifers ready for sale day. The workshop featured speakers from Boehringer-Ingleim, Cargill, Casey County Veterinary Services, Kentucky Beef Network and Kentucky Department of Agriculture. The Casey County Extension Agent assisted in setting up the field day as well as teaching a portion of the event.

All 90 attendees learned about the factors of nutrition, health, and vaccinations, and examining their cattle before selling. They were also provided with information and handouts on creating their own herd health plans. At the sale following the workshop it was noted that new consignors had joined the sale that had been in attendance at the Heifer Development Field Day as a direct result of the field day. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the event as well as interest in future similar programs. It is anticipated that this event will continue to impact the quantity and quality of females at the Liberty Belle Sale.
