Adult Beginner Sewing Class

Author: Maranda Brooks

Planning Unit: Fayette County CES

Major Program: Apparel and Textiles (Non-Master Clothing Volunteer)

Plan of Work: Build Engaged and Empowered Communities

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

It was a pleasure this week as the FCS agent to stop in and meet the instructor Loretta and ladies of the adult beginner sewing class. To a wonderful surprise, Loretta indicated to me that 5 out of the 10 ladies registered were completely new beginners to sewing and signed up to the course. One specific African American women I had the pleasure of meeting named Rachel Donaby expressed how excited she was for the opportunity to learn a new skill since she had never been to the extension office nor touched a sewing machine in her life. She indicated that she was recommended this three week course by a friend and since then has signed up to be on the monthly FCS newsletter mailings. Loretta and the ladies provided input on future programming that I have taken into consideration and look forward to what providing future rotations of sewing, crocheting, quilting and other textile programming can do for the community and extension office. I think the potential to build a diverse presence of attendance to programming such as this is very promising. Three additional classes have been added per request from the ladies seeking more time to grow and learn with this project!
