Planning Unit: Family and Consumer Sciences

Major Program: Active Living and Health Promotions General

Plan of Work: Health & Wellness throughout the Life Span

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 2022 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps for Kentucky had Owsley County ranked the least healthy for health outcomes and health behaviors. With these statistics in mind, the Owsley County Family & Consumer Sciences Advisory Council continues to see the need for health & nutrition education as a high priority for our community members.

The Owsley County Cooperative Extension Service created a year-long movement challenge to provide motivation and resources to participants.  Participants receive daily check-in posts and educational information related to health and physical activity.  Since the start of the program in January 2022 76% of participants have lost weight, 76% improved their BMI, 58% lowered blood pressure, 44% lowered blood glucose levels, and 53% lowered their cholesterol.

Participant comments include: “I have so much more energy than before”, “I feel so much better than before”, “We have added some of the recipes to our family meal routine.”
