Wildlife Habitat Workshop Series

Author: Charles May

Planning Unit: Perry County CES

Major Program: Forest Education: Health, Management, and Utilization

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Perry County Extension Service teamed up with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Perry County Conservation District to offer a series of extensive workshops on Wildlife Habitat Improvement and Forest Management to improve wildlife populations on private land.

This series was the first of its’ kind in Perry County. More than 60 people attended the workshops. Attendees gained knowledge on habitat improvement for various wildlife populations on their land by managing their forest, controlling invasive plants, and establishing a basic wildlife food plot.  They also learned tree identification, Trail Camera Survey for Whitetail Deer, how to age and score deer and gained knowledge about state cost-share programs and how to apply for them which can be used for Wildlife Habitat Improvement.

The Perry County Conservation District provided each attendee with wildlife food plot seed mix to plant a summer and fall wildlife food plot which totaled over $5000.00 in value. The Perry County Extension Service provided instruction on how to correctly take a soil sample and the benefits of soil testing as it relates to food plot establishment and health. The Perry County Extension Service also provided free soil testing to the attendees. To date, 15 of the attendees have taken advantage of the free soil testing offer.
