Eating healthy has always been such a burden for many people and as a result of poor eating and lack of exercise, families are starting to see effects from those unhealthy habits. According to Kentuckyfacts.org, Eastern Kentucky has the highest rates of obesity in the state. Lee County has a 43% obesity rate. When this knowledge came to light the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent brainstormed on how to get the community to start eating healthier. With COVID still putting a limit on in-person programs and technology being so popular amongst a variety of different ages, Facebook is where the FCS agent decided to start.

Plate it up KY proud has so many recipes with a variety of different products to focus on. The FCS agent with the help of the program assistant found recipes that fit the current season and that would have ingredients readily accessible in a rural location. Then would look to see if a video had been made for that recipe, if not, it would be added to the list of recipes to be filmed. The agent and program assistant would make, film, edit, and post videos of the recipes.

Starting in the fall of 2021, Plate it UP KY proud recipe cards and videos were posted to the Lee County Extension Office’s Facebook page. For 6 weeks there was a fruit or vegetable highlighted throughout the week. In those 6 weeks, 13 recipe videos were made and 18 recipe cards were posted.
