Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Encouraging Healthy Living

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The most recent CDC Data report states, the obesity rate for Greenup County is 35%. Greenup County is in the top 10 counties for other health diseases, such as heart disease and 16% of Greenup County adults suffer from diabetes. Research has shown there is a natural link between nutrition, physical activity, and behaviors toward healthy lifestyles. The Greenup County Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Extension Agent, along with the Snap- Ed assistant, partnered with Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Cardiac Rehab unit to bring awareness to Cardiac Rehab Week.

Fifty-five participants attended one of the cooking demonstrations provided by Greenup County Extension. Participants of the cooking demonstrations received a copy of the 2018 NEP Nutrition Calendar as well as samples of the Skillet Enchilada recipe. The participants also received information on proper food safety and heart healthy cooking tips.

As a result of this event fifty-five citizens of Greenup County were introduced to Extension programming. Since the initial event a long-term partnership has been formed with classes available monthly to the patients of Our Lady of Bellefonte’s Cardiac Rehab Program. One participant stated “I generally would have never tried that recipe but it was delicious. These classes are a great way to try new healthy recipes and gain information to help in my recovery process.”
