Professor PopCorn and The Five Food Groups

Author: Valerie Robinette

Planning Unit: Pike County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) assistant partnered with Feds Creek Elementary School to provide nutrition and health education opportunities for local students using the Professor Popcorn curriculum

Students were instructed on correct food portion sizes and the MyPlate plan making half your plates fruits and vegetables, followed with a whole grain, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. Students learned about the vitamins and minerals derived from foods; and why it is important to eat a variety of foods from each food source. Additional topics discussed included food safety practices, the importance of drinking water, and physical activity.

Ten (10) students participated in the program and post evaluations showed that 90% of the youth gained knowledge on diet control; 80% improved food safety practices: and 60% increased physical activity.  Overall, 100% of youth participants improved in one or more core areas.

Positive student responses included: " I got a bigger bottle for water to drink more of instead of soda;" I now wash all my fruit before I eat:" and, "I now know why I need to drink milk with my meals."
