Major Program: Plant ID

Plan of Work: Farm and Environmental Sustainability

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As an Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent we receive a lot of calls with questions about weed identification as well as weed control. Unfortunately, the timing on these calls is typically after it is too late to do anything about the noxious weed in question. In an effort to provide education to avoid these “too late” scenarios the Casey County Extension Office partnered with Casey County Farm Bureau and Warner Fertilizer to offer a Weed Identification Field Day. After meeting with the partnering groups as well as the Casey County Agriculture Advisory Council plans were made to host the Weed Identification Field Day.

On June 7th, 2022, the field day was held at the Johnson Family Farm. Weed Specialist, Dr. JD Green from the University of Kentucky came to the event to lead a pasture walk and discuss the identification and treatment of local weeds in forages. The Casey County Soil Conservation District provided a demonstration on using the local shared-use sprayer. Following the presentations, a Weed ID Contest was held to test the knowledge that participants had gained from the event. In total over 80 people participated in the Weed Identification Field Day.
