Between December 2021 and March 2022, several Extension specialists expressed their interests in learning more about IRB requirements for Extension programs to the Extension Evaluation Director. To address this need, UK Extension Program and Staff Development, in partnership with UK Office of Research Integrity (ORI), hosted a virtual webinar entitled “Navigating IRBs for Extension Program Evaluation.” During the webinar, two ORI representatives addressed scenario-based questions about IRB requirements for needs assessments, pilot studies, and other program evaluation activities. Thirty-three (33) Extension specialists and associates participated in the webinar. However, only eleven (11) responded to the evaluation tool that was deployed to assess learning outcomes. Nine (9) of the respondents agreed/strongly agreed that they gained a better understanding of how to navigate IRBs for Extension programs and a better understanding of IRB requirements for pilot projects. Likewise, 90% (all but one of the respondents) agreed/strongly that they gained a better understanding of when an IRB approval is needed for needs assessments and when requests for use of secondary data are appropriate.
