According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture the consumer price index for food has increased 8.3 percent from April 2021. These prices are expected to increase throughout the year. With food prices on the rise Wolfe County Cooperative Extension Senior Assistant partnered with the TR Center to provide participants classes and information on budgeting food dollars and making meals stretch among other meals. Participants learned to compare prices before buying, identify foods on sale, to use coupons, shop with a list, batch cooking, and using the unit pricing. 94% of participants showed improvement in one or more of these food resource management practices after completing the seven required lessons from the Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum. One participant stated, “Learning how to use the unit prices by comparing the price of different sized packages and different brands to find the best deal.”
