Keeping Trees Healthy

Planning Unit: Russell County CES

Major Program: Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Skills Development through Youth Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Russell County 4-H presented a program on tree care as part of an ongoing series focused on plants.  Approximately 200 youth participated in the program.  The youth learned to identify the major parts of the tree and the function on each part.  They also learned to count tree rings and how that weather and seasonal changes impact tree growth.  The youth then hypothesized about tree scarring (i.e. fire, insect damage, tree crowding, etc.).  A few weeks after the program, the youth were asked about the impact of the activity.  Ninety-eight percent indicated that they planned to take care of trees to keep the woodland environment healthy.  Over 90% understand the function of bark to tree health and could count the tree rings.  In this program, the youth were introduced to a career opportunity in forestry.
