In a twenty year study by Stanford University on the benefits of environmental education for students it was revealed that environmental education has led to a number of positive impacts, from improving academic performance, to enhancing critical thinking skills, to developing personal growth and life-building skills including confidence, autonomy, and leadership. Some of these studies has found that environmental education students were more likely to be civically engaged. The Kenton County ANR Agent was contacted by the Kenton County Conservation District to assist in coaching an Envirothon Team from Lloyd High School in Erlanger. The team was preparing for a regional Envirothon competition that is sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts. The theme of the event was Waste to Resources.  Kenton ANR Agent collaborated with the local Conservation District Supervisor to design a curriculum which focused on a local state-of-the-art Diary Operation.   A day long field trip was held in April at this dairy farm.  There were learning stations that addressed best management practices of water resources, applications of fertilizers, animal waste, and run off addressing soil erosion.   Twelve students from Lloyd High School attended the field day program to prepare for the school’s first ever Envirothon competition on April 30, 2022.  According to the Lloyd High School advanced science teacher and the local Conservation District Supervisor, this field day instruction stations were key to the team placing 12th in a field of 37 Envirothon teams. Teacher, Mr. Duncan followed up with the Agriculture Agent to tell him that this field day, “demonstrated almost every one of the learning objectives needed” for the Lloyd High School Envirothon Team to be competitive.
