Cumberland County continues to reap the benefits of a project that first began 8 years ago as a youth service project focused on community beautification and revitalization. The Partners with Pride project convened a group of dedicated community leaders that resulted in a long-term partnership among local businesses, Cumberland County Extension, and the Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce.

In 2018, Partners with Pride created and sponsored a new festival designed to grow the local economy by promoting local tourism. The River Festivus is now held annually the 3rd weekend in August in Burkesville. The 3-day event features, kayak, paddle board, and canoe races. The festival also features; a 5K race, car show, fishing tournament, crosscut saw contest, hundreds of vendors, concerts, and numerous other activities. The 4th annual River Festivus was the largest event on record according to local historian. Promotional videos and media have reached over 100,000 people so far in 2022. In 2021, all hotels and resorts were at full capacity during the festival. Plans are now underway for the 5th annual River Festivus August 19-21.

Since its inception, Partners with Pride has raised over $165,000 in private funds that have been used for multiple community development projects. The group has also worked to help the City of Burkesville become a certified Kentucky Trail Town in March, 2022, a seven year effort. As a result of the partnership the City of Burkesville has also been awarded a TAP (Transportation Alternative Program) grant for $178,536 to improve sidewalks from the town square to the ramp at the Cumberland River. It will facilitate the pedestrian flow between the town square, senior citizen center, park, and river. Engaging youth in community conversations has paid great dividends and resulted in sustained community and economic development.
