Beef Business Foundations Video Series

Author: Kenneth Burdine

Planning Unit: Agr Economics

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Beginning beef producers need to develop skills in goal setting, farm financial management, and basic marketing. At the same time, new beef cattle producers often struggle to attend in-person programs due to demands on their time from off-farm employment and often having young families. With this is mind, the concept for an educational video series targeting new beef producers was born. The Beef Business Foundations series is a collection of 8 educational, conversational, Youtube-style videos developed and delivered by Kenny Burdine, Steve Isaacs, and Jonathan Shepherd in the University of Kentucky Department of Agricultural Economics. These were recorded and edited in the UK Ag Econ department. One video was released every two weeks beginning in April and continuing through June. The initial video topics in the series were based on feedback from industry stakeholders, but the video series could easily be expanded in the future.

Reach of the video series has been very encouraging and feedback has been very positive. Most people are watching the videos through Facebook, but they are also set up as a playlist on the UK Agricultural Economics Youtube channel. One ANR agent emailed the following feedback, "Excellent job!!!! Continue to let agents know where these are posted, so we may refer to them when needed." The table below includes topics for each video, along with Facebook and Youtube reach as of early July 2022.
