Plan of Work: Healthy life style choices make for a happy, healthy life

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Lewis County Extension Program organized and conducted a Health and Safety Day for 3rd though 6th grade students at Central Elementary.  There were 204 participants and 7 presenters.  The Lewis County Health Department taught participants how to treat a cut and burn, Primary Plus presenters taught participants how to prevent sunburn and how to protect their skin while in the sun, Doctor Porter and representatives of SOMC taught students how to do the Heimlich, Philip Konopka of the Lewis County Extension Office taught youth how to protect themselves when riding a four-wheeler and to always wear a helmet, Kenny Gulley of Rose Farm Supply taught students about tractor safety, Diana Wilson of the Lewis County Extension Office taught students to think their drink and to choose water over soda, and Fleming-Mason Energy representatives taught participants about being safe around electrical appliance and to not go near electric lines that are down.  Ninety-nine percent of participants said they learned how to prevent sunburn and protect themselves while in the sun and 100% said they learned to stay away from electrical lines that were down and not to get out of the car if they were in the road.  When riding a four-wheeler, 99.5%  of participants said they learned to wear a helmet and 56% said they would wear a helmet when riding a four-wheeler.
