Planning Unit: Montgomery County CES

Major Program: Leadership 4-H Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Leadership & Volunteer Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Young adolescents (middle-school aged youth) warrant education experiences and schools that are organized to address their physical intellectual, emotional/psychological, moral/ethical, spiritual and social developmental characteristics (Caskey & Anfara, 2014).Kentucky 4-H Summit seeks to engage middle school youth and retain their involvement in 4-H through the middle school years.  Summit focuses on the developmental needs of middle school youth providing opportunities:to develop leadership skills; to belong to a group of peers and expand their teamwork skills; to exercise interactive communication skills through networking with other 4-H members; and to experience generosity by giving back through a community service project.  Summit provides a valuable experience in a safe environment for middle school youth at a time in their lives when they are experiencing rapid physical, cognitive, moral, psychological, spiritual, and social-emotional development.  Montgomery County joined 88 other counties of Kentucky in participating in this year’s Summit.  Seven (7) middle school youth; two (2) State Teen Council delegates and one agent attended the 3-day event.  As a result, 85.71% of the county delegates felt accepted by their team; made a connection with their State Teen Council delegate; improved communication skills; and reported they could lead a communication activity on their return home. Furthermore all would like to apply to be a State Teen Council member or serve on one of the other 4-H leadership boards that include Performing Arts Troupe; Science, Engineering and Technology; Fashion; and Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Academy.  Six (6) out of the seven (7) delegates were attending Summit for the first time.
