Horticulture for Underserved Audiences

Author: Susan Fox

Planning Unit: Lyon County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Home Horticulture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Several underserved audiences were reached with horticulture programs this spring. A raised bed and containers for vegetables were installed at the Lyon County Head Start. Several people donated time, topsoil was donated to make this happen. The 16 preschoolers helped to plant seeds in the dirt and were read a gardening book. Subsequently, squash has been harvested, tomatoes are growing well and bush green beans have been planted. Vegetables have been shared with families as they pick up their kids and it is a topic of conversation for the families.

A vegetable and flower container garden planting was held for the second time at the Lyon County Community Building with the support of the local Housing Authority Director. Fourteen people participated in the project including 4 African Americans and 1 wheelchair-bound person. Forty pots were planted with tomatoes, peppers, and flowers and some took squash and okra seeds to plant. In a follow-up visit tomatoes, squash and flowers were growing well! Residents appreciated having a local program just for them.

A monthly garden club is held at the Senior Citizen’s Center. During this program we have discussed Genetic Engineering, Itty Bitty Tomatoes (dwarf varieties), and Wild Edible Plants. Ten people planted the dwarf tomatoes and took them home to evaluate over the summer. Members are enjoying the meetings which usually include a hands-on component or an activity.
